Album - 2021 [2] - Requiescat in Pace

In November 2020, my father was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. He passed away on March 21, 2021, a frail shell of the man he used to be. My ticket for Manila was on March 22nd. Unfortunately, due to a second wave of COVID-19, I wasn't allowed to board the plane. The Philippine government had enacted a travel ban that disallowed incoming visitors unless they had a Philippine passport. And the travel ban went into effect on the very day I was supposed to fly. I appealed for a travel exemption but by the time I got it, my father had been buried and COVID was raging anew across the Philippines.

So I watched my father's last living moments on a screen, watched his funeral wake on a screen, watched the interment and burial on a screen.

As I waited for the travel exemption, I had my bags packed, stayed away from my music production computer, and installed my music software on the laptop I was planning to bring with me to the Philippines.

And I poured out my frustration into these songs that were created using only my laptop's QWERTY keyboard and a mouse and my Reason 10 software. Most of the songs were composed and arranged the week of the funeral and finalized a month later.

This album is a grim expression of grief and heartbreak, of being in stasis, of imprisonment. But in the same token, it points toward hope. Perhaps because in its wordless way, art is the only channel that can process pure emotion and turn it into something positive.

Rest in peace, dad.
